Scalable Web Development
Key techniques and architectural decisions to build web applications that scale confidently.

Scalability is not a feature you add later — it's an architectural discipline woven into every decision from day one. The most expensive rewrites we've been hired to perform were on systems that outgrew their foundations.
The Three Layers of Scale
- Frontend scale: code splitting, lazy loading, edge caching, and CDN distribution
- Backend scale: stateless services, horizontal scaling, async task queues, and connection pooling
- Database scale: read replicas, indexing strategy, query optimisation, and eventual partitioning
Design for Statelessness
Stateless services are the cornerstone of horizontal scalability. When any instance of your service can handle any request — because session state lives in a shared store (Redis, database) rather than in-memory — you can add or remove instances without disruption.
Caching Strategy
A well-placed cache is often worth ten servers. CDN caching for static assets, Redis for computed results, and HTTP cache headers for API responses can reduce origin load by 70–90% in read-heavy applications.
Premature optimisation is the root of all evil — but deliberate, evidence-based scalability planning is engineering wisdom.
Monitoring as a First-Class Concern
You can't scale what you can't measure. Instrument your application with structured logging, distributed tracing, and real-user monitoring from the earliest production deployment. Scaling decisions without data are guesswork.
